Portable Appliance Testing

Portable Appliance Testing is an important part of any Health and Safety Policy. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed people to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take practical steps to ensure no danger results from the use of a portable appliance.

The Electricity at Work Regulations Act 1989 requires electrical appliances and systems to be maintained to prevent the risk of accidents. Recommendations in the Health and Safety Executive Memorandum of Guidance HS(R)25 state that maintenance should be based on a regime of regular inspection and testing by a competent person.

Lighting Systems

Lighting in any property is a big drain on your energy bills. Cutting down your bill is easy, let me walk you through how we could save you, energy and money. MEE can help you upgrade your lighting systems and you will instantly save on your home energy bills.

Standard houses use lights such as pendants and downlighters or spotlight fittings. Fortunately energy efficient products are available for most types of light fitting. The two main types of energy efficient light bulbs available in the current market are Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

CFLs are known as energy efficient light bulbs. CFLs are typically 3 to 10 times more costly than the old style incandescent light bulb but they last 8 to15 times longer and use two-thirds to three- quarters less power, saving money on energy bills. MEE can replace all traditional lights with a compact fluorescent light.

LEDs are also a good option and are particularly good for replacing spotlights and dimmable light fittings. These are more expensive to buy initially, but they are more efficient than CFLs and will save you more money over the long term. Our service can arrange with you to replace all halogen downlighters in your home with LED alternatives, saving you money throughout the year.

Changing our habits to save money can seem like hard work at first, but with Macdonald Edinburgh Electrical Ltd here to help, saving money is easy.

We can arrange light switches in convenient places to turn them off such as at both the top and bottom of stairs, each end of a hallway and each door to a room. We can also install presence detectors that detect movement and turn lights back on, or off if they have been unintentionally left on.

You can also have sensors and timers on external lights so they are only in use when they need to be.

Electrical Rewiring

Needing your home Rewired? Warning signs that you can look for:

  • Obvious signs of damage to socket-outlets, switches, and lights.
  • Signs of overheating at socket-outlets.
  • How many socket-outlets are there in each room? If there are only one or two, or they are single sockets. it could be an indication that the installation may be quite old.
  • Are the socket-outlets of the round pin type? If so, the installation is very old.
  • Round light switches and braided flex hanging from ceiling roses to light fittings, black switches and sockets mounted in skirting boards may require replacing.
  • Check the fuse box – just because it looks new doesn’t mean it is – it may have had just a fuse box change. Is it protected by a RCD ? If not then fuse box needs replaced.

  • Has it got rewirable fuses? These have not been installed in new installations for many years.
  • If the fuse box has a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a haphazard mixture of fuses it is likely that it dates back to before the 1960s and will need to be replaced. When arranging rewiring your property, Macdonald Edinburgh Electrical Ltd will make a list or a drawing of the socket-outlets and lights you require in each room as discussed and get the agreement in writing.
  • If you plan to buy your own light fittings or accessories for the electrical installation to be fitted, we must first check that they are suitable for the location where they are to be installed.
  • MEE will will clear up after each day’s work.
  • MEE will reinstate all flooring upon completion.
  • The installation will comply with the UK national standard, BS 7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations)
